LESSON PLAN ON (Pythagoras theorem)

LESSON PLAN
CLASS X
Pythagoras theorem

Content analysis

Right Triangle, perpendicular to hypotenuse, similar triangles then obtained, corresponding sides which are proportional, statement of the theorem, proof, activities to prove the theorem.

Specific objectives.

To enable the pupils to
(i) Identify similar triangles
(ii) Identify the corresponding sides of similar triangle.
(iii) Recall the statement of Pythagoras theorem
(iv) Draw diagram to represent Pythagoras theorem
(v) Prove the theorem.
(vi) State the converse of the theorem
(vii) Play the activities to prove the theorem.
(viii) Solve riders based on Pythagoras theorem.

Teaching Learning Activities.

A power point presentation on Pythagoras theorem prepared by the teacher is presented. The animated activity helps the students to visualize the theorem and to identify the similar triangles. The presentation also helps them to prove the theorem by alternate activities. The same activities may be performed without using computers where students may do them manually.

Activity 1( Traditional way)

The teacher gives instructions. Pupils take 2 congruent right triangle; fold one of them such that a crease is formed along the altitude to the hypotenuse. Then cut it along the crease to make two right triangles. Try to super impose them and discover they are similar to each other and also to the original triangle. Then write their corresponding sides which are proportional, to prove the theorem.

Activity 2.

Prove a2 +b2=c2 where a and b are the sides and c is the hypotenuse of a right triangle using( a+b)2= a2+b2+2ab and

a

Area of the square= 4times area of each rt triangle+c2

Activity 3
Equate the sum of the areas of the square of two side of a rt. triangle to the area of square of hypotenuse by adding equals to both sides method. Give them 8 congruent rt. Triangles for this purpose.

Home work and assignments

Activity 4: Teacher asks the students to arrange 4 congruent rt triangles to form a square with side c and prove Pythagoras theorem in similar way as shown above.
Activity 5: Verify Pythagoras theorem by counting unit squares on graph paper.
Solve the riders in the exercise in the text book.

Evaluation.

Discussion, skills of doing activity, questioning answering technique, home work etc
